THE ART OF MARKETS JOURNAL – OIL (UPDATE)
Abstract
01 March 2026 – 1200PM AEST
Recap: As mentioned in my share market caution on 26 February 2026, markets are extended and volatility is compressed. Positioning is heavy and confidence is elevated. Under The Art of Markets framework, this combination represents late-stage vertical expansion with rising cascade probability. The catalyst is unknowable, but the structure is observable. Risk discipline should now outweigh return pursuit. When volatility returns, it is unlikely to return gently. Current structure is extended, leveraged, under hedged and full of confidence. This is fertile ground for shock amplification. Beware of the Black Swan. On 27 February 2026 I further highlighted that the butterfly is flapping its wings in the financial sector. Let’s now focus on OIL.
OIL: With the conflict in the Middle East the catalyst is now confirmed. The catalyst is quickly morphing into a wider conflict with outcomes unknown with the possibility of unpredictable contagion. Coupled with the butterfly flapping its wings in the financial sector, the structural landscape is quickly altering and deteriorating. Volatility is now assumed. In this backdrop, the price of OIL is ready to surge. Crude OIL WTI closed on Friday around 67.00. Major resistance is around 90.00.
08 March 2026 – 1200PM AEST
The widening Middle East conflict has seen Crude OIL WTI surge to 90.00 major resistance / volatility event zone in just one week. Above 90 materially alters inflation and policy expectations. Above 90.00 could trigger a full animal ecosystem dislocation risk. There is now structural multi-year resistance at 115.00 area (2011 & 2022) with 140 (2008) possible if the conflict does not end soon and an orderly return of supply is seen. Volatility will not return gently.
Structure Defines the Window of Opportunity
Structural Context
Energy markets have moved from latent structural fragility into catalyst-driven expansion. The widening Middle East conflict has triggered a rapid repricing in crude oil, with WTI surging from 67.00 to 90.00 in one week. This level represents a major volatility event zone and a key macro inflection point.
Above 90, oil transitions from a commodity price movement into a systemic macro driver capable of altering inflation expectations, monetary policy assumptions and cross-asset positioning.
Markets entered this period extended, leveraged, under-hedged and full of confidence. This structural backdrop creates fertile ground for shock amplification. Volatility has now returned and as previously cautioned, it is unlikely to return gently.
OIL is the transmission mechanism. Major structural resistance remains near 90.00 then 115.00 area.
The Seven Entanglements
Price
Price is the final expression of all entangled forces. Oil has moved rapidly from 67 (pre-conflict equilibrium) to 90 (major resistance). This move represents a transition from range compression to volatility expansion.
Key structural levels now shaping behaviour:
- 67 – Pre-shock equilibrium
- 90 – Volatility ignition / resistance zone
- 115 – Multi-year resistance (2011 & 2022 highs)
- 140 – Extreme disorder scenario (2008 spike)
Price has reached the first major structural confrontation point between Bulls and Bears.
Time
Time determines whether a move is temporary or structural. Oil shocks often begin as short-term geopolitical reactions but can evolve into longer-term supply cycles.
Current time horizons:
Short term (days/weeks) – Rapid volatility expansion.
Medium term (months) – Supply disruption narrative dominates.
Long term (years) – Energy underinvestment and geopolitical fragmentation may re-emerge as structural drivers.
The speed of the move suggests the market has entered a fast time regime, where price discovery occurs rapidly.
Positioning
Positioning determines how vulnerable the market is to sudden moves.
Before the catalyst:
- volatility was compressed
- hedging was light
- positioning was crowded in risk assets
This created a fragile ecosystem. When the geopolitical catalyst appeared, participants were forced to adjust positioning quickly, accelerating the move higher. Momentum funds and systematic traders likely contributed to the speed of the rally.
Fundamentals
Fundamentals represent the real-world supply and demand drivers. Key oil fundamentals currently influencing price:
- geopolitical conflict in the Middle East
- potential supply disruptions
- strategic reserves and production policy
- global demand expectations
While fundamentals triggered the move, markets often overshoot fundamentals during shock phases. The current price surge reflects risk pricing rather than confirmed supply loss.
Risk
Risk measures the potential for instability and contagion. Oil carries powerful macro transmission risk because it directly affects:
- inflation
- consumer spending
- corporate margins
- monetary policy
Oil above 90 begins influencing global macro expectations, increasing cross-asset volatility. This is where energy shifts from a commodity story to a macro story.
Confidence
Confidence determines how comfortable market participants are taking risk. Prior to the catalyst, markets exhibited:
- high confidence
- strong risk appetite
- minimal hedging
Oil shocks tend to fracture confidence quickly. If oil remains elevated:
- hedging demand increases
- volatility rises
- broader risk assets may become unstable
Confidence is now being tested across the ecosystem.
Pattern Recognition
Market participants constantly search for historical analogues. Several historical patterns are now influencing behaviour:
2008 oil spike to 140 area
2011 supply shock to 115 area
2022 Ukraine conflict to 115 area
When traders recognize similar patterns, they often position for repeat scenarios, which can reinforce momentum. This collective pattern recognition may begin anchoring expectations toward the 115 region.
Liquidity Path if Stress Escalates
Crude Oil WTI closed near 90.00, a major resistance and volatility ignition zone. The move from 67 to 90 in one week reflects the speed at which markets reprice when liquidity steps away and positioning becomes one-sided.
Key structural levels now frame the energy ecosystem:
67.00 – Pre-conflict equilibrium
90.00 – Major resistance / volatility ignition zone
115.00 – Multi-year structural resistance (2011 & 2022)
140.00 – Extreme disorder scenario (2008 spike)
A sustained break above 90 materially alters the macro landscape. Oil at this level begins transmitting pressure into inflation expectations, central bank policy, bond yields and equity valuations. Should the conflict persist and supply disruptions deepen, the 115 region becomes the next structural magnet, with 140 possible in a disorderly escalation scenario.
Portfolio Implications
Energy is one of the most powerful macro transmission channels in global markets. Higher oil prices propagate through the system via several pathways:
- Rising inflation expectations
- Pressure on central bank policy
- Increased input costs for industry
- Deteriorating consumer purchasing power
- Rising bond yield volatility
If oil remains elevated, the risk is that energy becomes the trigger for broader market repricing.
The Current Ecosystem
The Art of Markets can see that in the OIL market:
Bulls – gaining confidence due to geopolitical catalysts
Wolves – actively driving the momentum move
Sheep – beginning to notice the trend
Bears – temporarily sidelined
Pigs – appear late in strong trends and can accelerate price spikes before sharp reversals
This combination tends to produce fast directional moves with elevated volatility.
Summary
The current move confirms the earlier structural warning. Markets were stable but fragile. We have now transitioned through three stages: Fragility to Catalyst to Expansion. The next phase depends on behaviour around the 90 level.
- Failure at 90 then the move remains a volatility spike.
- Sustained move above 90 then oil becomes a systemic macro driver.
- Break above 115 then broad cross-asset ecosystem dislocation risk rises materially.
Markets entered this period extended, leveraged and under-hedged. The emergence of The Middle East geopolitical catalyst in energy has begun activating the wider market ecosystem. Risk discipline should now outweigh return pursuit. The structure remains vulnerable. And as previously noted, when volatility returns, it rarely returns gently.
The Butterfly is flapping its wings in multiple markets.
Structure first. Narrative second. Risk always.
