THE ART OF MARKETS JOURNAL – USD/JPY IN FOCUS

Abstract

Recently in my Art of Markets Journal Articles, I have highlighted that there is a classic multi-market stress alignment, where currencies, bonds, energy and policy constraints begin reinforcing each other. Narratives, particularly in the media, have focused on OIL & Interest Rates. Narratives will soon focus on Japan and USD/JPY.

USD/JPY has closed on its highs in New York to finish the week above 159.70, very close to major resistance at 160.00 area. The USD/JPY is now firmly in focus.

Recall my Journal observation about USD/JPY on 23 February 2026 when PRICE was 154.40…USD/JPY – If price moves above USD/JPY 160.00, then the market is transitioning toward a super-fast rally towards USD/JPY 180.00 +

USD/JPY has been confined to a previously identified USD/JPY 140.00 to USD/JPY 160.00 trading range since mid-2023. The USD/JPY 140.00 base has held. There is now deep buyer liquidity below USD 153.00…. The Bank of Japan has intervened to stem USD/JPY rise multiple times, keeping the USD/JPY under 160.00. The problem is the market volatility is contracting, YEN carry trade investors who borrowed when rates were near zero are seeing yields rise after breaking up in late 2022 (0.25% to 2.25%, currently 2.10%). Now on 13 March the Japan 10 Year Bond Rate has risen to 2.24%.

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda warned that a weak yen could amplify imported inflation as oil prices climb. This could pressure the central bank to accelerate policy normalisation.

Next week, Prime Minister ‌Sanae Takaichi is heading to Washington USA to attend a Leaders Summit on March 19, 2026. Japan imports more than 90% of its energy requirements, relying heavily on external supply. Its energy mix is dominated by crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and coal. 97% of oil is imported, over 90% from The Middle East. Japan has tapped its Emergency Energy Reserves for the first time highlighting its vulnerability to prolonged supply disruptions.

When an Art of Markets Asymmetric Window Opportunity is found across multiple markets at the same time (refer to my recent Journal updates) market structure can come under increasing stress.

As I mentioned in my recent Volatility Journal article (March 10) – The ecosystem is entering a structural stress phase. Energy, currencies, bonds and equities are now interacting at critical levels simultaneously. As highlighted in my Contagion Risk Journal article, when many market animals operate at once, behaviour becomes unpredictable and nonlinear.

The key insight is simple – Volatility will not return gently. It will emerge through positioning shocks, policy reaction, geopolitical escalation and liquidity withdrawal.

The ecosystem is no longer calm. It is unstable. Volatility is assumed.

Under The Art of Markets, this combination increases cascade probability. Volatility is not an anomaly. It is the structural outcome of entangled stress.

To understand what happens next refer to my Journal Articles published 23 February 2026 and 13 March 2026.

Volatility Will Not Return Gently

The current market ecosystem contains simultaneous stress points across:

  • Energy
  • Currency
  • Bonds
  • Policy
  • Geopolitics

Under The Art of Markets, this is the definition of entangled stress. When entanglements align Volatility does not drift back, it erupts through cascades.

Summary

Under The Art of Markets, large price movements rarely occur in a straight line. They emerge through cascade pathways, where one structural imbalance triggers another. If USD/JPY breaks the long-standing 160 resistance, the move toward 180+ would most likely unfold in distinct behavioural stages, not a single continuous rally.

Volatility will not return gently. It will emerge through shocks.

The Butterfly is flapping its wings in multiple markets.

Structure first. Narrative second. Risk always.
